Child Psychologist Ewell | Dr Jo-Ann Valentine
A Path Forward: Chloe's Story
Chloe, aged 12, had always been a quiet but happy child, but the transition to secondary school had left her feeling completely overwhelmed. She began withdrawing to her bedroom as soon as she got home, dropping out of her weekend clubs, and becoming highly tearful at the thought of socialising. Her parents felt helpless as they watched her confidence disappear.
Using a blend of ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) and systemic practice, we didn't push Chloe to suddenly become an extrovert. Instead, we worked gently to normalise how exhausting secondary school dynamics can be. We provided a safe space for Chloe to untangle her social anxiety and figure out what kinds of friendships actually felt safe for her.
By collaborating closely with her parents to adjust how they communicated about school at home, we took the pressure off. Chloe gradually built her own practical toolkit for managing her worry, allowing her to slowly reconnect with her interests and manage the school day on her own terms.
