A Path Forward: Toby's Story
Toby, aged 11, was struggling with intense, intrusive worries that had turned bedtime into a nightly battle. He had developed a series of rigid routines that had to be completed perfectly, and his parents felt exhausted trying to accommodate his growing list of 'rules' just to avoid a meltdown.
Using CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) combined with a compassionate, systemic approach, we didn't focus on telling Toby his worries were silly. Instead, we worked creatively to 'externalise' the anxiety, giving it a name and looking at how it was tricking him. We provided a safe space for Toby to slowly build his tolerance for uncertainty.
By collaborating closely with his parents to gently and safely reduce the accommodations they were making for his anxiety, Toby regained his confidence. He developed his own practical toolkit to challenge his worries, and the family was finally able to enjoy peaceful evenings again.
