Child Psychologist Coulsdon | Dr Jo-Ann Valentine
A Path Forward: Sam's Story
Sam, aged 15, was brought to the clinic feeling deeply frustrated and 'stuck'. Having recently been identified as having ADHD, he was struggling with emotional dysregulation and frequent angry outbursts at home. Beneath the outward frustration, his self-esteem had taken a significant hit; he felt like he was constantly failing to meet expectations at school and was exhausted from trying to keep up.
Using a neuro-affirmative approach integrated with systemic practice, we immediately shifted the focus away from trying to 'fix' him. Instead, we worked collaboratively to help Sam understand how his brain processed the world. We provided a non-judgmental space where he could safely explore his frustrations and learn how to advocate for his own needs without feeling broken.
By collaborating closely with his parents, we helped them decode his outbursts as signs of cognitive overload rather than intentional bad behaviour. Sam built a practical toolkit to manage his energy and emotions, leading to a much calmer home environment and a renewed sense of confidence in himself.
This vignette is a composite clinical example used to illustrate the therapeutic process while protecting client confidentiality.
